Rovi Corporation (Nasdaq: ROVI) today announced that the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) at the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) has issued an initial determination in its action against Netflix and Roku. The ALJ found three out of the four Rovi patents involved in this action are valid, however has determined that Netflix and Roku have not infringed the patents in the current proceeding. In addition, the ALJ found that Rovi had satisfied the domestic industry requirement of the ITC for all of the asserted patents and rejected all the defense claims such as patent misuse and exhaustion that were raised by Netflix and Roku.

Companies Work Together to Enable the Secure Delivery and Multi-Screen Playback of High Quality Entertainment Based on the Latest Compression Technology
Rovi Corporation (NASDAQ: ROVI), driving digital entertainment innovation, today announced it is working with Broadcom to enable device manufacturers and service providers to utilize the benefits of High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC/H.265) to deliver an enhanced entertainment experience. Rovi is planning to drive 4K content creation and, through its DivX® HEVC Certification Program, the market availability of compatible devices. Broadcom plans to support the playback of DivX HEVC streaming and downloadable content in the company’s recently announced BCM7445, an Ultra High Definition (UltraHD) home gateway chip. UltraHD quadruples the resolution of today's 1080p HDTV displays and HEVC provides the necessary efficiencies to reduce the bandwidth required by up to 40% as compared to the previous H.264 standard.

Campaign Results Part of Latest Rovi Study on Connected TV Advertising, Owners, and Device Usage in the UK
Rovi Corporation (NASDAQ: ROVI), driving digital entertainment innovation, today released the latest findings from its comprehensive connected TV advertising study conducted in the United Kingdom with Decipher Media Research*. The latest results reinforce the ability of Rovi advanced advertising to positively affect brand awareness and engagement. Consumers exposed to ads on the platform, including an advert for American Airlines placed by leading media planning and buying agency, Universal McCann Manchester, expressed significantly high rates of brand favorability, awareness of key brand statements, and purchase intent as compared to a non-exposed control group. In addition to studying advertising effectiveness, the study also provided new data on connected TV owners and their device usage.

Launched early this year, the program enables participants to gain early access to the MainConcept® HEVC SDK and begin to test and evaluate the new compression standard. Expected to have a significant impact on video distribution and consumption, High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) or H.265 is designed to offer almost double the compression efficiency of H.264 and therefore reduce storage and bandwidth costs, as well as support higher resolutions such as 4K.

Subscribers Can Use Apps to Find TV Shows and Movies; Schedule Recordings on STB from PCs and Tablets
COGECO Cable Inc. (TSX: CCA) (“Cogeco”) and Rovi Corporation (NASDAQ: ROVI) announced the launch of two new interactive applications, Cogeco Remote Recorder powered by Rovi TV Listings and TotalGuide xD, that will provide Cogeco’s subscribers with access to the TV schedules on their set-top personal video recorder (PVR) devices from web-enabled devices. Cogeco is the first to commercially launch TotalGuide xD with remote record capability. Subscribers can use the apps to browse the TV listings, explore programs, find what to watch, and remotely schedule recordings for viewing at a later time and date.

Scheduled for release in April, Tears of Steel will be one of the first films to be available in the 4K format, also known as ‘4K Ultra High Definition.’ Rovi’s sponsorship of the film demonstrates its commitment to driving industry adoption of H.265/HEVC (High Efficiency Video Codec), the newly ratified compression standard that will enable delivery of 4K content and improve consumers’ experience with streaming video across a range of devices. 4K refers to the horizontal resolution of the format which is about 4,000 pixels, providing twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of the 1080p HDTV format.
